A participation portfolio is what replaces “your job” as the organizing unit of an adult life once survival is no longer the pressure underneath work. Rather than one occupation that defines identity, a mature adult carries a shifting mix: perhaps a technical project, mentoring younger participants, a stint on a local governance body, care for a family member, study in an unrelated domain, and a creative pursuit — all at once, and changing over time.
Why it matters
Some of these still earn extra compensation, because they consume scarce time, carry unusual responsibility, or produce market value — people can still build enterprises and become wealthy. What changes is that paid activity no longer owns the person’s identity. The governing question becomes where is my geometry presently most useful, most alive, most challenged, and most needed? — and because the ecology keeps changing, the answer is never fixed. It is the adult expression of work freed from jobs, lived out across the arc of a life.
