The distinction is small and load-bearing. A job is an institutional arrangement for trading labor for resources. Work is purposeful effort — the raising of children, the teaching, the maintaining of communities, the investigating, making, restoring, and caring that a society always needs done.
Why AI makes it matter
Because they’ve been bundled, “losing jobs” reads as “losing purpose.” Pulling them apart changes the whole picture of the AI transition: machines may reduce jobs while leaving work nearly unlimited. The strange, hopeful possibility is less compulsory employment and far more meaningful work — but it only holds if survival stops depending entirely on selling economically necessary labor.
