This is the deepest page in this thread, and the most concrete. Standing is the filter that survives even when production becomes free. So the question is whether a fairer version of it can be built rather than merely wished for.

How standing was traditionally made

Standing has historically been produced by a small number of institutions most people never think of as being in the standing business:

  • Credentials. Degrees, licenses, and titles that let a stranger extend trust without doing their own evaluation.
  • Affiliation. Belonging to a recognized firm, lab, or lineage that lends its accumulated standing to its members.
  • Track record. A visible history of things that worked, legible to others.

The first two are transferred standing — fast and cheap if you start with access, nearly impossible if you don’t. That asymmetry is the gate.

Why the machinery is weakening

Two forces are eroding transferred standing at once. Cheap production makes track record easier to display — you can show the work directly instead of relying on a proxy for it. And the institutions that grant transferred standing are struggling to keep their signals meaningful as the underlying skills change faster than they can. This is an opening, not a victory: weakened signals get replaced, and the replacements can be just as exclusionary.

Principles for earned-standing infrastructure

If we want to build standing that doesn’t route through accidents of access, a few principles hold:

  1. Portable, not platform-owned. If your standing lives inside one company’s walls, that company is the new gatekeeper. The record has to belong to the person.
  2. Costly to fake, cheap to verify. A signal anyone can manufacture is worth nothing the moment they do.
  3. Plural, not singular. A single universal score recreates the monoculture it was meant to escape and hands enormous power to whoever computes it. Many overlapping signals are harder to capture.

The risk worth naming

There is a failure mode where “merit, finally visible” becomes a harsher gate than the one it replaced — a world of total legibility where every misstep is permanent and only the already-advantaged can afford a flawless record. A humane standing system needs room for beginnings, second tries, and quiet growth. Otherwise we will have automated judgment and called it fairness.
