Meaning jurisdiction is the contested authority over what matters — and the AI transition may set off an enormous struggle for it. Religion may say God has already answered; authoritarian movements, the nation decides; markets, revealed preference decides; technology companies effectively, engagement shows what matters; an individualist view, the person alone decides.
Why it must stay plural
The model cannot simply choose one — including the last, because a person’s current preference can be captured, frightened, addicted, conditioned, or immature, so what matters is not only chosen but partly detected. The governing safeguard borrows directly from jurisdiction itself: there can be no monopoly jurisdiction over what matters, because the moment one institution obtains it, ontological correction becomes nearly impossible.
